Take your braid to the next level with this vertical waterfall braid hairstyle tutorial.
The waterfall braid is a regular favourite of mine. At first it seemed too complicated, but now it’s become a mainstay in my hair-drobe.
For this tutorial, I was inspired by the beautiful Missy Sue. My gorgeous niece asked for a special hairstyle for her formal and I jumped at the chance to braid her stunning hair.

The waterfall braid is a classic but this vertical variation merges it into a cooler, sideswept hairstyle.
It’s possible to do this braid in your own hair, but it does take practice. This waterfall braid hairstyle tutorial shows me doing my niece’s hair. If my hair was longer, I’d definitely be doing this in my hair. Not long till I can!

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Clear hair elastic
  • Bobby pins
  • Hair powder or hairspray

STEP-BY-STEP:

  1. Begin by curling your hair into loose waves. I’ve used a large 32mm curling wand. Once the hair has cooled, I like to shake the curls out with my hand to soften the look.
  2. Part your hair on the right. To find your perfect deep side part, draw an imaginary line up from the outside of your iris, through the arch of your brow to your hairline. This is where to start your part.
  3. Start your braid along your hairline, next to your part. If you have a fringe / bangs you can leave them out like I’ve done here.
  4. Split your starting section into three. Braid together, cross 1 over 2, then 3 over 1, then 2 over 3. Add in hair from the top of your head into section 2.
  5. Instead of using section 1 to cross over 2, you drop 1 out and pick up a new piece of hair behind it.This crosses over 2 and continues the braid.
  6. Add in hair only from the right and drop out the left piece and pick up a new piece just behind it.
  7. When you reach your neck, stop adding in hair and finish the waterfall with a regular braid and secure with a clear elastic.
  8. Pin the braid underneath. Adjust the braid to make sure it’s sitting evenly. Secure it with styling powder or hairspray.

Hair Romance - Vertical waterfall braid hairstyle tutorial - How to keep your braid in place

STYLING TIPS

  • Hold the style – unless you have a lot of texture in your hair, this braid can slip. Use hair powder or hair spray to keep your braid in place.
  • Curling tips – check out my tutorial for soft waves if you need more hair curling tips.
  • Shine on – For a formal look, I also like to really make this style glow with a shine spray. Just spritz it on at the end.
